M72 - A Globular Cluster

This image was taken with modified Canon 1000XS camera and the Hyperstar 3 lens system on a Nexstar 11 GPS. The image was captured on October 15, 2012 from the bright night skies of Tempe, AZ. Messier 72 is also known as NGC 6981.


The star cluster known as M72 is aproximately 55,400 light years from Earth. The cluster is actually rather bright, but it is so far away that if appears to be faint.
