M1 - The Crab Nebula
This shot was taken on 2/9/10, using the Slooh remote controlled telescope in Dome 2 of their facility in the Canary Islands. The telescope used was a 14-inch f/11 Schmidt-Cassegrain and the camera was a SBIG ST-10XME. This shot is the result of a stack of three 5 minute exposures.
The Crab Nebula was formed about a thousand years ago from a supernova explosion noted by Chinese astronomers in 1054 AD. The nebula is about 6,500 light years from earth and is about 8 light years wide and 11 light years long.
